In addition to my hardware product design work at Open Bionics, I was also responsible for developing the company’s distinctive visual identity, and implementing it across all web, digital & print channels.
From the beginning, OB’s founders wanted to position the company as a forward-thinking tech startup, in contrast to the often quite dated (and very “medical”) styling of the incumbents in the prosthetics industry.
My challenge was to create a visual style that communicated our vision of a modern, digital-led prosthetics company - a style that was adaptable enough to work across a range of media, taking inspiration from leading tech companies, yet unmistakably our own.
From choosing fonts and colour schemes, to defining a recognisable style for our 3D renders & 2D illustrations, to designing logos & iconography, I learned a huge amount in the process & massively expanded my skillset in a range of visual design disciplines.

From choosing fonts and colour schemes, to defining a recognisable style for our 3D renders & 2D illustrations, to designing logos & iconography, I learned a huge amount in the process & massively expanded my skillset in a range of visual design disciplines.
I redesigned Open Bionics' website from scratch, and initially developed the new brand identity as part of this process. I defined the colour palette, font selection, and created a distinctive style for 3D product renders with lighting to match the brand colours.
I used Figma to create wireframes, high-fidelity mockups & prototypes, and worked with developers from a local agency to prepare each new page to go live. Once the devs had coded an initial version of the site, I made tweaks & final adjustments to the CSS myself in Wordpress.
An important aspect of the site redesign was to improve the experience on mobile, as earlier versions of the site had been very focused on the desktop UX, with mobile users being something of an afterthought. Since our site traffic was split approximately 50/50 between desktop & mobile users, I highlighted addressing this as a key requirement.
For each new page and module built, I ensured the mobile experience was considered from the start and optimised in line with the desktop version.
Following the website redesign, I subsequently designed a number of marketing brochures, where I applied (and continued to refine) the Open Bionics brand style. Below are a selection of pages:
I produced comprehensive Brand Guidelines to ensure that anyone else producing content - whether colleagues or external contractors - would be able to produce work consistent with our brand. Excerpts below.
