I’m a multidisciplinary 2D & 3D designer with over 10 years experience, based in Bristol, UK.
Originally trained as a hardware product designer & engineer, in the last decade I've continued to expand my creative skillset to include graphic, UX/UI, and web design. With experience in startup, corporate & consultancy environments, I've taken a multitude of varied projects from initial concept through to launch (and beyond).
I love to run wild with a creative brief, but thanks to my engineering background I also work well with technical teams and can speak their language; in fact I pride myself on creating design work which is practical & pragmatic as much as it is beautiful.
I'm a natural collaborator, and I believe I'm at my best when bridging divides; between the digital & the physical, the artistic & the technical, between user & business needs.
Within Open Bionics, Ronan operated as a one-person design department. Externally, people often assumed the company had, or had contracted the services of, an entire design team.
Leading the design function at multi award-winning tech startup Open Bionics, with responsibility for the overall look and feel of products and brand.
Working as a "one man design team", I developed Open Bionics' distinctive visual identity, and ensured it was implemented to a high standard across web, print & app touchpoints, including the creation of Brand Guidelines & Style Guide for use by colleagues & external partners.
I was also responsible for the aesthetic side of hardware product design, including optimising the visual design of the “Hero Arm” bionic arm product & packaging, and development of licensed arm covers and original designs from concept through to manufacture & launch. Additionally, I conducted varied user research to inform & validate product design decisions.
I managed the submission & approvals process with Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm, defined both physical & software-based production processes, and delivered training to technical & production staff. I was also responsible for the graphic design of our customer-facing content, including brochures, clinical training guides, and the product Quick Start Guides & User Manuals, ensuring they communicated complex material in a clear, highly visual manner.
Worked on a number of projects in categories ranging from wearables to commercial white goods to home power storage, and was lead designer on two of these. I gained valuable experience of working in a consultancy environment and managing relationships with clients & suppliers, as well as expanding my working knowledge of materials, production processes and design software packages.
In the New Product Innovation dept, I contributed to the design, build and test of new product ideas from concept through to fully functioning prototype. Working in both small and large teams, I worked on multiple projects and produced visual and functional prototypes, and conducted user research and tests. During my time in the New Product Ideas dept, I presented work directly to James Dyson and other members of the executive board.
Prior to NPI, I worked in the New Product Development team, refining product designs in preparation for manufacture in Malaysia, as part of a large product team. Working to tight deadlines, I was responsible for designing, building and testing prototypes to validate performance and robustness, and developed novel mechanisms for improved functionality and usability. I also ensured part designs were suitable for manufacture, worked with the materials and safety teams to ensure product compliance, and created engineering drawings for production.
Short term contract between finishing at university and my agreed start date at Dyson. Worked on the design of a medical device for elderly people. Duties included user research, CAD, prototyping and testing.
Worked on live briefs for clients redesigning the exteriors of various products (consumer, medical, industrial) as part of a small team. Reporting to the Creative Director, I participated in meetings with clients and in final presentations, and took part in factory visits.
A complete immersion in Chinese culture, this experience massively increased my confidence in working in an unfamiliar environment and exposed me to business and social life in the Far East.
This 5 year undergraduate Masters degree is a collaboration between the two educational institutions, intended to produce graduates with both the creative flair & the technical know-how necessary to design innovative new products.
