My Role:

Industrial Design, Product Visualisation, Design for Manufacture

Tools Used:

Blender 3D, Adobe Suite, 3D Printing

In addition to the licensed cover designs, I also created a range of original cover designs for the Hero Arm.

Cost constraints meant that these covers could not feature multi-colour graphics, so I relied on embossing textured details to give each design its distinctive personality. Since the Hero Arm is custom-made to fit each patient's arm, the designs also had to be adaptable enough to conform to different shapes & sizes of arm.

I developed a robust 3D design method to apply the designs onto the varied customer arms, and trained the "Configuration Engineers" at Open Bionics to put it into practice.

Vortex Covers

These covers feature a swirling "vortex" pattern emanating from each of the two circular details on the arm - the hand button & the BOA tensioner dial.

Az Deco Covers

These covers were inspired both by Art Deco era geometric patterns, and those used in traditional Aztec crafts. The resulting mash-up became one of the most popular Hero Arm cover designs.

Harlequin Covers

This faceted geometric design arose from some of my earliest experiments applying a repeating 3D texture to the surface of an object. In certain lighting conditions, the facets can appear diamond shaped (hence the name "Harlequin"), but in others, they show their true form: triangles forming a series of hexagonal pyramids.

Sentinel Covers

These covers took inspiration from rugged military-style hardware, as well as more futuristic sci-fi items from games & movies, such as body armour & mecha suits.

Aero Covers

This set was inspired by "athleisure" wear, particularly the different panels of contrasting textures commonly seen in leggings & trainers.
